The TikTok ban saga reached a fever pitch last weekend as the app went dark across the United States, only to reappear within 12 hours with the fanfare of a “The Apprentice” episode. In his freshly rebooted presidency, Donald J. Trump has given the app a 75 day stay of execution for ByteDance, the app’s owner, to figure out how it can play nice with a potential American co-owner, lest the app’s millions of American users feel the full weight of its absence and the void it leaves in their cultural and economic lifestyles.
